SmackDown Review, 5/22

MIZ TV

The heel gets the crowd to chant for his talk show and his sure-to-be-shitty TV show. Great heel work.  It’s stuff like this that’s made me pretty sick of Miz. And worse, the members of New Day are his guests. I’m glad they can make each other laugh. That’s about all they can do at this point. The only thing Miz does in this segment that I approve of is try to break up them up. At least he slides back into an actual heel role by the end of the segment. And yes I laughed pretty hard at the Game of Thrones pancake reference, so the segment finally got pretty good by the end. As I figured would happen, Paige makes the match happen.

Segment Rating: Four Gold Medals

MIZ VS. BIG E

Big E is a very entertaining wrestler. New Days as a group just annoys the shit out of me, which is bound to happen with any gimmick after this long. It was pretty damn funny when they gave him a syrup break instead of a water break. E is a powerhouse in the ring and a solid worker, and his matches are always fun to watch. In terms of having an entertaining match, he’s the best wrestler of the group. The Bar comes out and causes enough of distraction to get Miz a win, likely leading to a six-man tag next week.

Match Rating: Six Gold Medals

MITB QUALIFIER: LANA VS. BILLIE KAY

I can’t figure out why Lana is over. I don’t see it. And it’s not just because of Rusev Day, she was over before that. I’m not a fan of Lana getting into MITB but if she’s over, they’re smart to capitalize on it. But seriously, what was this shit?

Match Rating: One Gold Medal

ANDRADE “CIEN” ALMAS VS. SOME NAMELESS JOBBER

I would want to see Almas feud with Lesnar just to see Zelina and Heyman trade promos. This wasn’t a match, it was a statement. Squash matches can be great matches if they help get a guy over, and this was a great squash match.

Match Rating: Seven Gold Medals

IN-RING SEGMENT: AJ STYLES & SHINSUKE NAKAMURA

Heel Shinsuke is much better on the mic than face Shinsuke. As everyone hoped, this one got very physical, with Shinsuke coming out on top because of a chair shot and ending with a KNEE TO FACE. Shinsuke counts AJ out then announces the MITB stipulation is a Last Man Standing match. Hell yeah.

Segment Rating: Eight Gold Medals

NUMBER ONE CONTENDER MATCH: THE USOS VS. GALLOWS & ANDERSON

Entertaining pre-match promos with Gallows & Anderson running down The Usos’ failures against the Bludgeon Brothers and The Usos telling the good brothers they haven’t earned anything yet on SmackDown Live. The crowd was hot for this match and it was some great action. All four of these guys are so damn good in the ring. We get to see Gallows & Anderson face off against the Bludgeon Brothers at Money in the Bank, and that should give the Bludgeons a really good challenge.

Match Rating: Six Gold Medals

MITB QUALIFIER: NAOMI VS. SONYA DEVILLE

What a spear by Sonya. Naomi is so incredibly athletic, I never miss her matches because she never ceases to amaze me with her in-ring ability. Great job at selling the core injury from the spear in this one, she sells it perfectly throughout the match, and Sonya continues to attack the ribs. It’s very smart offense by Deville because it slows down Naomi, who has a fast-paced offense. Naomi gets the roll-up pin and I’m thrilled that she’s going to be in the ladder match. I doubt she wins it but I think she’ll provide some holy shit moments.

Match Rating: Seven Gold Medals

Just like I predicted, a six-man tag match next week, Miz & The Bar vs. The New Day. I don’t know why you’d read any other site.

DANIEL BRYAN VS. JEFF HARDY W/SAMOA JOE ON COMMENTARY

Two fan favorites compete for a chance to take on Samoa Joe for the final spot in the MITB ladder match. You knew the crowd was gonna be hot for this one. Both guys have such an exciting style that gets the crowd even more into the match. The pace calms down a bit as the match goes on but it’s still a great match. Jeff BOUNCED off of Bryan’s knees. That looked PAINFUL. Jeff taps out to the knee bar and Samoa Joe immediately cuts a promo saying there’s nothing for Bryan to celebrate. I’m not very excited for that match, Joe bores me.
