Raw Review, 7/9

No promo from Lashley this week thankfully, instead he and Roman just start beating the shit out of each other. This is how the feud should have been done from the beginning. The crowd booed when Angle said not tonight, save it for Extreme Rules, because it’s still fun to see two huge guys fuck each other up. They’ve only watered it down by having them cut promos on each other, especially because Lashley is god damn horrendous on the mic. The crowd was HOT for this, I was really surprised to see how much they were into this segment. It does feel important when you send the entire locker room out to break up a fight, but I still thought the crowd, especially a big city crowd like Boston, would shit all over it.

Lashley had the upper hand until Roman hit a huge suicide dive over the top rope onto the entire locker room, and I think that’s the first time I’ve ever seen him do a suicide dive. Reigns’ music plays but it’s not over, and the crowd pops huge when he sprinted back down the ramp to get as Lashley. If the plan for tonight is not already to have this continue intermittently throughout the show, then somebody should call an audible, because the crowd is loving it.

I’m really surprised to see Alexa out-wrestling Natalya. She’s been out-wrestling a lot of people that she shouldn’t be lately, and it really doesn’t make sense for her character and makes her opponents look weak. Her character is built on cheating and taking shortcuts, not on being a strong technical wrestler. Mickie is her muscle. Alexa IS good in the ring, but it doesn’t do anyone any favors to have her out-grapple Natalya.

It DOES do her favors to take a kendo stick to Nia after the match and then run when Nia snatches it from her. Nia snaps it over her knee. Badass. Fans can’t wait for Nia to get her hands on Alexa again. The match sucked but the ending was a good preview for their extreme rules match.

WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY??????? This is a good match, but this feud should have been over after the first match, not dragged out for weeks. There were some entertaining moments in the match and they made it just competitive enough to keep Jose as a credible opponent, but please, PLEASE let this be over now. Ignoring the idiocy of dragging out the feud, the match was really good, short and sweet.

Rollins’ promo was pretty shitty. I don’t know if it’s the writers or his delivery or a combination, but I think he’s become pretty bland on the mic, and Ziggler ate him up. Dolph verbally tore Seth apart, and the best he could come back with was suggesting Dolph see a doctor because the peroxide from his bleached hair was seeping into his brain. Yawn. Then he says McIntyre fucks sheep, which probably could have been funnier with a better delivery. We get Rollins vs. McIntyre tonight.

The promos between these teams have been really good, but the singles matches have been terrible. This match is definitely a step up from what these guys have done recently. I’m not sure if it was on purpose or not, but Bo Dallas whacked his face off the ropes when he got thrown to the outside. That did not look pleasant. With the announce team playing up Matt’s fury and aggression tonight, I have to guess that it was a planned spot. After a distraction on the outside, Bo hits a spinning hangman’s DDT or something, and Matt Hardy loses again. Is this the beginning of a heel turn for the Deleters of Worlds, or are they just getting more aggressive and less comical? Good match.

For some reason they put a microphone in front of Bobby Lashley again. The “Believe That” made it extra cringeworthy.

Promo Rating: Nine Bobby Lashleys

Great, there’s more Sasha and Bayley therapy. Graves expresses the fans’ frustrations well.

Still plays a great heel. Every one of her promos come out so flowing and natural.

Heel Promo Rating: Three Roddy Pipers

A rematch from a last week when these two had a pretty good and entertaining match. Ember makes a mistake chasing Liv to the outside, because she’s outnumbered there. It looks dumb when Sarah Logan goes to disrupt the match and just stands there while Ember does a springboard punch to her face. Not nearly as good of a match as last week. Move on from that one-on-one feud.

Match Rating: Two Gold Medals

If Seth Rollins beats Drew McIntyre tonight, Drew is banned from ringside at Extreme Rules. That’s cool, it gives the match more importance.

Elias’ black and yellow guitar looks awesome. The crowd knows Elias insults every town. They cheer when he says he’s recording a debut album, then boo when he insults them. People are dumb. Speaking of dumb, Constable Corbin is bad. Then again, I think that may be what it takes to get some heels booed these days, so if it gets heat, I guess it’s working.

Roode is slightly less boring than usual in this match, but a heel turn is still sorely needed. Elias looked rusty. I think it was a mistake giving Roode the hot tag since Finn is much more over. There wasn’t much reaction for Roode in that situation. Finn got a bigger one just for breaking up a pin attempt. Not much of a reaction to Finn and Corbin throwing hands outside, I don’t think anyone really cares about that feud. They yelled GLORIOUS of course before Bobby Roode got his face smashed into the mat, but this match mostly fell flat.

Strowman gets Owens in a steel cage at Extreme Rules. Fuck yeah.

Another really good promo from Reigns. He’s grown by leaps and bounds in that department. No more slow, drawn out promos that sound like he’s trying to recite them from memory. Hopefully he keeps this up.

Promo Rating: Four Stone Colds

Drew is just bullying Rollins around the ring early in the match. The storyline is how much punishment Seth is taking tonight leading into his match with Ziggler at Extreme Rules. With a victory tonight, Seth can ensure that McIntyre is banned from ringside at Extreme Rules, but will it be worth the beating he’s taking tonight? A brutal match with a few false finishes makes it very entertaining, and Rollins brings much of the crowd to its feet with a corner-to-corner running buckle bomb. Rollins hits a curb stomp on Ziggler when he interferes, but he eats a Claymore from McIntyre and his efforts tonight were all for naught. Big win for McIntyre and Ziggler in a very good match.
