Mae Young Classic Round Two Review, 10/3

TONI STORM VS. HIROYO MATSUMOTO

Matsumoto has the advantage in experience, and it shows early. She seems to be effortlessly controlling Storm. She’s strutting around with a smile on her face while Storm can’t get anything going at all. I do not like this, because I love Toni Storm. Storm finally gets some offense in with a huge snap German suplex. Matsumoto still gets the better of the next flurry of exchanges and puts Storm in a Lion Tamer, Boston Crab, Half Crab, and seems to let Storm get to the ropes. It seemed that she didn’t want Storm to tap out, she just wanted to weaken and dishearten her a bit.

Survivor Series Rumor

I’m hearing that this year’s Survivor Series won’t focus on Raw vs. SmackDown, but instead Team Corbin vs. Team Angle for control of Raw. If I’m picking sides here, it’s likely a given that The Shield will be on Team Angle while McIntyre, Strowman, and Ziggler will be on Team Corbin. Venturing a guess as to who will round out the teams, I’ll say Bobby Lashley and a returning Jason Jordan for Team Angle while Kevin Owens and Elias fill out Team Corbin.

If we do in fact get Team Angle vs. Team Corbin, who are your guesses for who will be on each team?

AKIRA TOZAWA VS. GENTLEMAN JACK GALLAGHER w/DREW GULAK & THE BRIAN KENDRICK

Two guys with excellent technical skills. Not a lot of guys can frustrate an opponent the way Gallagher can, but Tozawa almost equals him in that department. Unfortunately for Tozawa, Gallagher has backup in Gulak and Kendrick that run interference and provide distractions. Following a Kendrick distraction, Gallagher begins picking Tozawa apart with the body manipulation that he’s known for.

TEAM B’N’B (FINN BALOR & BAYLEY) VS. TEAM MAHALICIA (JINDER MAHAL & ALICIA FOX) w/SUNIL SINGH

Alicia Fox takes care of the comedy early before Balor and Mahal put on a good show. Sunil Singh catches Bayley and asks if she want to “Bollywood Dance”. I used to work on an inpatient psych unit, so I feel like I’m qualified to say that Alicia Fox deserves to be in there more than most of the patients I observed.

OPENING SEGMENT: PAIGE

Joe committed the most dastardly crime in WWE history? Do I need to make a list? Pillman’s Got a Gun? Katie Vick? MUHAMMAD FUCKING HASSAN?? I get it, gotta sell it. AJ’s promo was weird. I’m not sure how I feel about it. I didn’t want to like it at first, but it got better as it continued.

IN-RING INTERVIEW: DEAN AMBROSE

Ambrose teases that he’s done with The Shield. He’s so good on the mic. Sure, he emphasizes that The Shield is a brotherhood, but he also runs down all the reasons why he would leave and why he could go out on his, continuing to leave some doubt. I love the options that Corbin offers Ambrose. It’s such a great way to get in his head. Ambrose doesn’t break, and ends up facing Strowman.

HIROYO MATSUMOTO VS. RACHEL EVERS

Interestingly the crowd starts chanting “fight forever” before the bell even rings. It sounded like Matsumoto caved Evers’ chest in with that double dropkick from the top rope. Both of these ladies are really powerful. Cole calls Matsumoto a “vocal performer”. That’s an understatement, she grunts and yells with every move. I never understood the purpose of that until I trained in Krav Maga and realized how much more powerful my strikes were when I did that.

OPENING SEGMENT: WILLIAM REGAL & THE UNDISPUTED ERA

Kyle O’Reilly is afraid of War Raiders. His mommy probably told him a scary story about Vikings when she tucked him in last night. This is the kind of stuff Undisputed Era should be doing. I wouldn’t be surprised if they attack Regal here.
