SmackDown 1000 Review, 10/16

TRUTH TV

Hell yeah! Truth TV! Dance break! And let’s pour some cold water on that boner with Stephanie McMahon and her horrendous entrance music… and what the balls is that dancing she’s doing? Odin almighty… just knock it off. But OH! HERE COMES THE MONEY! I just really don’t want this to turn into a two-hander for the McMahons. Well here comes Vince, and that’s exactly what this is. At least this was not a total McMahon family jerk off, it was a McMahon family dance break! I’m all for that. Great job.

TEAM B-N-B (FINN BALOR & BAYLEY) VS. MONSTER ECLIPSE (BRAUN STROWMAN & EMBER MOON

Ember Moon is one of my favorite wrestlers and she makes everyone she’s in the ring with better. Braun makes everyone he’s in the ring with cry. If Team B-N-B wins, it won’t be because Balor pins Strowman. Strowman is kicking the shit out of Balor, badly. The only hope Balor has is to get to Bayley, which he is finally able to do. Ember and Bayley are terrific against each other. Great, intense pace, back-and-forth action, and awesome moves. Bayley hits her Bayley to Belly finisher on Ember, but Braun pulls Ember out of the ring and makes the tag.

SMACKDOWN WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: CHARLOTTE FLAIR VS. BECKY LYNCH (c)

They have play hot potato with the women’s titles in the past, so it wouldn’t totally surprised me to see a title change here and have Charlotte go into Evolution as champion, but I don’t think it’s likely. No wasted movements in this match, each woman is all over the other. It’s such an obviously personal feud and both of them are so intense and focused.

Breaking News: Big Show Returns

WWE has announced that the Big Show will make his return to in-ring competition on SmackDown Live this week. He will be facing Randy Orton in a qualifying match for the WWE World Cup, a tournament that will conclude at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia. The Big Show has not wrestled a match since losing to Braun Strowman in a steel cage match on the September 4, 2017 episode of Raw.

Other matches announced for SmackDown live include another WWE World Cup qualifying match between Jeff Hardy and Samoa Joe as well as a SmackDown Women’s Championship match between Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch, with the stipulation that if Becky is disqualified for any reason, she will lose the championship.

SMACKDOWN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: THE BAR VS. THE NEW DAY (c)

Big E will sit this one out, a curious decision, but they must feel like Sheamus and Cesaro can both neutralize his power, so they want to double down on a speed advantage. Unfortunately for them, power is winning out in the early going. Impressive spot when Sheamus launched Woods in the air and Cesaro hit him with an uppercut.

OPENING SEGMENT: PAIGE

Joe committed the most dastardly crime in WWE history? Do I need to make a list? Pillman’s Got a Gun? Katie Vick? MUHAMMAD FUCKING HASSAN?? I get it, gotta sell it. AJ’s promo was weird. I’m not sure how I feel about it. I didn’t want to like it at first, but it got better as it continued.

TEAM MONSTER ECLIPSE (BRAUN STROWMAN & EMBER MOON) VS. TEAM PAWZ (KEVIN OWENS & NATALYA)

Let’s not pretend we’re here to see anything other than Braun Strowman smashing Kevin Owens. However, I do love watching Ember Moon wrestle. I love Owens pleading with Natalya, “Don’t let her tag!” Owens’ insults are entertaining. “Congratulations, you’re eight years old.”

MIZTV

Miz announces a number one contender match against Daniel Bryan at Super Showdown. Maryse announces to thunderous applause that this is her last night on SmackDown Live. Daniel Bryan comes out to beat the balls off of Miz and knocks him into Maryse. Miz barely touched her and she needs a stretcher. You can see her smiling and Miz is about to attack DB as soon as he gets up and we’ll see she’s faking. It’s exactly what happens, and this time she gets tagged good. Excellent.
